How Nootropics Can Give Entrepreneurs the Competitive Edge

As entrepreneurs, we rely on our minds constantly.  It is important that our mental performance is optimal for creativity, clarity, increased learning and to gain a competitive advantage.  Because of this, I have been intrigued by nootropics for the last 7 years.  If you are not familiar with nootropics, they are a class of smart-drugs, supplements, or nutraceuticals that have a way of increasing our mental abilities.

  • Nootropics (/noʊ.əˈtrɒpɨks/ noh-ə-TROP-iks)—also called smart drugs, memory enhancers, neuro enhancers, cognitive enhancers, and intelligence enhancers—are drugs, supplements, nutraceuticals, and functional foods that improve one or more aspects of mental function.

If you every saw the movie Limitless, the main character Eddie discovers a smart-drug called NZT-48, that increased his learning abilities, enabled him to be a proficient piano player in 3 days, learn multiple languages, and progress quickly in his occupation.

While the story is clearly fictional and there is no such thing as real NZT-48, I have discovered that certain nootropics exist that do wake up your mind, creativity, motivation, and clarity.  In fact, I often times struggle with mental clarity despite eating a fairly healthy diet, but I have found nootropics to be pretty amazing for their benefits and for their safety.

I have been very selective over the last 6-7 years with the nootropics that I experiment with.  In fact when using any nootropics, I research to ensure they are effective, have a proven track record for safety, and only look for trusted brands.

Piracetam: My all-time favorite nootropic.

Piracetam is my all-time favorite nootropic for all of its mental benefits and proven safety.  It is the original smart-drug developed in the 1970’s and has been supported by thousands of studies over the past 4 decades for safety, with absolutely no toxicity, even at very high dosages.  In fact in a large-scale, 12 week, high dosage trial of piracetam, found no adverse side effects.

Piracetam is thought to increase glucose and oxygen consumption in the brain, along with having positive effects on brain wave activity.  I have found piracetam to benefit my verbal/speaking skills, clarity, creativity, and focus.  Also, whenever needing to reset my body clock, or recover from jet-lag, I take a large dosage of Piracetam upon waking in the morning.  This assists in resetting my body clock and allows me to wake up the following morning without an alarm clock and feeling more rested.

Piracetam can sometimes take a few days to get into your system and begin to see the benefits.  I have taken dosages as high as 5,000 mg with no side effects, and it is usually recommended that you begin with a fairly high dosage (3,000mg+)dosage for what is called the “loading phase”.  After this initial loading phase, I have found that the benefits can be maintained with 1-3 800mg pills per day.

Piracetam does not work for everybody.  It is often said that if you are one that does not experience the benefits of piracetam, then you may want to try aniracetam.  Aniracetam is in the same family of “racetams” and is also known for its safety, but works on the brain differently than piracetam.  Those that do not experience benefits from piracetam usually experience benefits with aniracetam, and vice-versa.

Both Piracetam and Aniracetam can be difficult to find locally.  Occasionally you can find these products in a local health food store, but I have found the best selection and prices online.  Here are some reliable places to order online:

The Piracetam Stack:

To get even further benefits from piracetam, I combine the following supplements to work synergistically with Piracetam.

  • Rhodiola Rosea Extract – excellent herb for benefitting oxygen intake in the brain, decreasing stress hormones and improving clarity
  • Herbal Tea or Coffee – Caffeine amplifies the benefits of piracetam on the brain.  I personally am more of a tea drinker and have found green tea and yerba mate to work well with piracetam.  My favorite herbal tea is Yogi Tea Positive Energy, which has yerba mate, green tea and other adaptogen herbs in their for decreasing stress and lifting the mood.  If you prefer coffee, “bulletproof coffee” is an excellent choice.  Simply brew your coffee and add a tablespoon of grass-fed butter or coconut oil, which is excellent fuel for the brain.
  • Theobromine – Dark chocolate contains what is called an alkaloid, called theobromine which can lift your mental performance, mood, clarity, and energy.  I have found it to work great in conjunction with piracetam to further increase the positive mental effects of piracetam.

I will speak more on other nootropics that can be used along with piracetam, but for anyone interested in starting off with a cognitive enhancer, piracetam is a great place to start for its effectiveness and long-term safety. I know that it has helped my mental performance and creativity that has been vital in my business. As always, I recommend checking with your healthcare professional before beginning any new health regimen.
